The Amazon river is formed by the convergence
of the dark waters of the Negro River and
the lighter muddy waters of the Solimões
River. The explanation behind this spectacular
phenomenon may be down to the difference

Originally built in 1695, the Cathedral
of Our Lady of Conceição was the first church

Downtown
Manaus businesses are open from 8am to 12pm and
from 2pm to 6pm, Monday to Friday and from 8am
to 12pm on Saturdays. However, there are many
shops that now offer extended hours. Shopping
Centres are open every day of the week and close
at 10pm.
Banking
and Money Exchange
Most
banks will change traveller’s cheques as well
as cash. Banking hours in general are 9am to 3pm
Monday thru Friday. Automated cash dispensers
are located inside most banks, cash can be withdrawn
there 24 hours a day. National and foreign cards
(cash cards) as well as Mastercard, American Express,
Visa and Diners are accepted. Credit cards are
also accepted by numerous hotels, restaurants,
shops and gas stations. Money can be changed at
the airport, at banks, exchange bureaus and larger
hotels.
Restaurants
One
eats well in Manaus. Genuinely Brazilian, Gastronomy
in Manaus is rich in exotic flavors, with elaborated
delicacies, inherited from the indigenous wisdom,
whose alchemy prioritizes simplicity in the preparation
of dishes. Whether roasted in the oven or on charcoal,
cooked or fried, it is impossible not to indulge
in the unique flavor of fishes (there are over
2.000 species in the rivers of the region) such
as the tambaqui, the pacu, the sardine, and naturally
the pirarucu, known as the Amazon Codfish. Besides
the rich variety of regional dishes, Manaus offers
the option of restaurants specialized in the international
cuisine. Over a hundred restaurants may easy be
visited for your pleasure.
Tipping
Service
is usually NOT included in the prices in bars
and restaurants. Usually, these businesses are
authorized by the government to charge 10% as
service charge, and generally tips are welcome
in the range of 10-15 % according to your satisfaction.
